  Dr. Hutchins, the well-known American educationist and chairman of the editorial board of the Encyclopaedia Britannica, defines education as "the deliberate, organized effort to help people to become intelligent". Its aim, he contends, must be the fuller realization of manhood, not manpower. In this book he discussed the major issues which are already emerging in the educational field and looks forward to the next century, when it is possible to foresee a "learning society", in which everyone of every age would have the chance to continue his education as long as possible.
