The river is in Bengal; steamers pass up and down and, on the farther bank a mile away, a temple shows its roof among the trees. Country boats, their sails set square, move gently before the current and the wind, and buffaloes stand gratefully in the cool water. In the sand lie empty shells, bleached white and sun.
