Maudie Tipstaff is 68, living in one of Glasgow's poorer districts, a strait-laced, outspoken, domineering woman (lower class in origin) whose roisterous husband has after forty years finally deserted her. She is in fact a bit of a horror. Maudie has written to her two daughters and son, whom she has not seen for years, proposing herself for a three-months' visit to each of them, and at the beginning of the novel is starting out by bus for outer London where daughter Jean is married to a successful dentist.
